FREE Film Challenge Day!

10 hours ~ 1 day ~ 2 teams ~ 2 short films ~ tons of fun!

Friday, November 15th 9am-7pm, at the Ovation! studio (P.A Day for most public schools)

How does it work? Ovation! is partnering with an amazing production company “Magic Messes” to create original student films! Over ten hours at the studio, participating students will create, storyboard, rehearse, direct, and film their own shorts. Working with prompts from the “Magic Messes” project team, students will choose between two topics to centre their film: “Family, Friends and Fights” or “Feeling Down”. The group will be split into 2 teams, and each team is given 1 prop, 1 costume item, and a short script. Our film production & screen acting instructor Andrew Fantasia will be choosing the elements and the scene/script, assisted by our acting instructor Paige!  Each team will be provided with 1 camera, 2 camera batteries, 1 tripod, 1 mic, 1 SD card.  You meet at Ovation! and see what happens from there!  We’ll also shoot some behind-the-scenes interviews for an awesome documentary-style exploration of the above topics. Then the “Magic Messes” team will edit and distribute the finished films on their platforms!

Overview

  • 9am-9:30am = overview of the day, and teams are assigned
  • 9:30am to 12 noon = each team must use the prompts provided to create context and characters for the scene, assign roles for on and off camera; choose a filming location (both Ovation! studios and exteriors around the studio within walking distance), map out your shots, collect any additional physical elements (props, costumes, etc.)
  • 12noon to 12:30pm = lunch break = bring your own!
  • 12:30pm to 1pm = create your filming schedule; collect any other physical elements
  • 1pm to 5:30pm = get to your location (if off-site), follow your schedule and complete your filming
  • 5:30pm to 6pm = dinner break = pizza and snacks are provided!
  • 6pm-7pm = plan the outline and scope for the editing and create a storyboard for the editing team to follow. This is also pick-up-shot-time!

FREE Musical Theatre Workshop & WICKED Film Screening!

With guest artist Kyle Blair from St. Lawrence College

Friday, November 22nd 2024, 4:30-6:30pm (at the Ovation! studio)
Followed by a trip to a local movie theatre to watch the new WICKED film!

How does it work? Students will participate in a musical theatre learning session, encompassing an ‘Acting Through Song’ workshop that is focused on ‘presence and play’ in musical theatre performance! Students will be asked to prepare a musical theatre song in advance of the session – either a 32-bar cut of a musical theatre song, or something they’re working on in class for WICKED or VERSATILE VOCALS. Everyone will have the chance to work with our guest artist in a group session, and as a soloist showcasing their prepared materials. This will be followed by a Q&A about SLC’s musical theatre program, and the performance industry at large!

Afterwards, join us at a cinema for a screening of the new ‘WICKED’ movie-musical! Time & location TBA.

Meet our guest artist! Kyle Blair (he/him) is a professor of music theatre at St. Lawrence College and has been working as a professional theatre artist for 25 years. His credits include 21 seasons between the Stratford and Shaw Festivals. Other appearances include Crow’s Theatre, The National Arts Centre, Manitoba Theatre Centre, Neptune Theatre, Grand Theatre, Theatre Aquarius, Talk is Free Theatre, and Drayton Entertainment. Kyle holds an MA (University of Guelph), BFA (University of Windsor), and is a graduate of the Stratford Festival’s Birmingham Conservatory. Kyle is the recipient of a Merritt Award (Best Actor) for his portrayal of Billy in Billy Bishop Goes to War, the Odyssey Award (Notable Career Achievement) from the University of Windsor, and the Maureen Forrester & Dora Mavor Moore awards from the Stratford Festival.

Who can participate?  Our Level 3/4/5 Ovation! musical theatre or vocals students, ages 10 to 18 years. We will focus on learning the craft and showcasing our skills in a unique and fun environment! Each participant must prepare their musical theatre song demo, and wear fitness/movement attire (including indoor shoes!), and bring their own water bottle. You may join us for the workshop, film, or both! Film details TBA.
