Musical Theatre Class Students Performing On Stage

All Levels Program Overview

Musical Theatre Classes

For students wishing to learn, develop and deliver an assured live musical theatre performance.  MT class is a ton of fun and some really cool work and learning, combining singing with dancing and acting.  The co-ordination, focus, and brain power it takes and develops is amazing, and it all begins with PLAY!

At the beginning levels, the main focus is on vocal and pitch development (true beginner technique) co-ordinated with creative movement and ‘character’ work, all taught through a series of vocal exercises, ‘theatre-style’ games, rhythms and rhymes, story creation, and movement exploration.

As they move through the Levels, students begin to work more with sheet music/lyrics (scores) and scripts (the book or libretto), diving into more solid vocal technique (for both singing and acting), performance style and individuality. A wide variety of performance elements are covered, from the basics of a proper vocal warm-up, to discussions on vocal health, placement, breathing and posture. Students have fun while building the necessary foundations of good technique, combined with the versatility of performance and music styles for voice and movement.

At the highest Levels 4 and 5, students learn how to create and weave a variety of songs, scenes, dances and monologues from both the traditional and contemporary musical theatre canon into a comprehensive and cohesive story and musical theatre production.  Some seasons we choose a specific musical and do a tribute to it (past examples include tributes to Wicked, Come From Away, Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Something Rotten and Hamilton); and some seasons we choose a theme or a composer and we create our own ‘Show of Shows’.  In either instance, the focus is on instruction and development of solo and small and large ensemble work in all 3 ‘triple sensation’ elements.

Materials are chosen and specific casting is done internally through studio work in Sept and the classes work together learning how to put their  skills and tools to work by creating a dynamic and powerful musical production!

Specialist Musical Theatre Programs

This program is geared to MT or Acting students who wish to/need to develop their overall understanding of dance/choreography and movement.  It encompasses basic, fundamental elements of Western musical theatre dance styles. The main goal of the class is for the students to learn the fundamental dance steps of musical theatre choreography, and to increase technical ability, endurance, strength, and flexibility, while also improving their memory work for choreography. The class develops basic dance technique, movement concepts, proprioception (a sense of the body’s positioning/alignment), and spatial understanding and awareness, while having lots of fun!  Through structured exercises, improvs, and choreography combinations, students learn to gain technique and improve choreographic capabilities quickly within a group setting. Students will also apply their own creative ideas to movement. This is a skills program so they work together and present their choreography in the studio during regular class time.

Adult programs at Ovation! offer a unique educational and social experience.  Adults come to classes like ours for a variety of reasons.  You may be looking to try something new, or to get back into something you’ve always loved but have been away from for awhile. Whatever your motivation, and regardless of your current ‘level’ of expertise (or not!), taking a performance class will always………  Boost your confidence & self-esteem  <> Improve your presentation skills (oral and dynamic) <> Exercise your body, mind, and soul  <>  Provide joy and fulfilment!  This class develops the student’s appreciation and understanding of musical theatre performance.  Each semester, students learn 2 or 3 songs/scenes/pieces chosen from the canon of musical theatre repertoire. Our training consists of vocal technique development, acting/character development, and movement / staging retention.  Focus is on solid vocal technique (for both singing and acting), performance style and individuality.

A wide variety of performance elements are covered, from the basics of a proper vocal warm-up, to discussions on vocal health, placement, breathing and posture. Students have fun while building the necessary foundations of good technique, combined with the versatility of performance and music styles. Role-playing, vocal ‘games’ and exercises, physical awareness, and movement/staging are all rolled into one exuberant and energetic class. Due to the highly collaborative nature of musical theatre as an art form, student participation and leadership plays a heavy role in musical theatre training. Each student will be challenged in varied ways throughout the session, and each student will be given the opportunity to take on different roles in different pieces. This program wraps each semester with an in-class presentation of their work.

over the years Ovation! has connected with several other professional dance, acting, and musical theatre performance companies (MOTUS O dance theatre, Marky Monday, ChannukahPalooza, Judy & David, Education Arts Canada, Shadowpath Theatre, Panoply Theatre Collective, and many independent film producers).  Our students have participated in many professional shows and events.  As new projects arise, we reach out to current students with audition notices for these extra-special performance opportunities!

Details will be announced during the season!  (Additional rehearsal hours may be required for the spring demonstration – details TBA.)
  • Level 2 and Level 3 – these classes perform a song/dance/piece from a musical in the Winter Showcase; and a separate song/dance/piece from a different musical in the spring Get STAGEstruck! show.  Additional rehearsal and production hours will be required when mounting the spring show. All details will be provided.
  • Level 4 and 5 – these classes work separately all season and they also work together for ‘cross-over’ rehearsals scheduled throughout the season.  They produce a 75-minute tribute version of a musical.  They perform a song/dance/piece from their musical at the Winter Showcase in Jan, and they produce their full show together in April.  They also perform a new piece together or separately as part of the May Get STAGEstruck! show.  Additional rehearsal and production hours will be required when mounting the spring shows (details will be provided).  These higher level programs prepare students for post-secondary arts/mt performance programs.
  • Ovation! chooses intelligent, sometimes challenging, thought-provoking musical materials for our Level 4 and 5 MT programs. Any challenging subject matter is dealt with in a supportive and responsible educational manner.  We are committed to gender-blind and colour-blind casting.
  • ** MUSICAL THEATRE STUDENTS at Levels 3, 4 and 5 are required to augment their overall MT training with dedicated classes focused on the most demanding and under-developed discipline(s) in their personal ‘triple-sensation’ arsenal. To be a musical theatre performer, you must have strong technique and performance qualities in each of the dedicated disciplines:  SINGING, DANCING, and ACTING.

Season Overview & Student Feedback

  • Our Season runs from mid-Sept to end of May with weekly classes for each program.
  • The program Levels progress from primary through senior, introducing or enhancing the various components of the discipline and program. Each Level covers a 3 to 4 yr age range.  Depending on age, experience, and when they begin with us, a student could be in the same Level for 1 to 3 seasons.  Students learn how to function as both leaders and followers, experiencing the range of responsibilities and learning opportunities associated with being in a class with a variety of ages, personalities and types of learners.
  •  As students progress each season and also through the Levels, they build their personal and performer’s toolkit with more in-depth advanced learning through various teaching tools, focused on skill acquisition, technical development, and practical performance application.  As the Level increases, the in-studio class-time lengthens and the expectations increase with more or lengthier materials, more ‘mature’ but still age-appropriate content, and more advanced learning tools requiring increasingly more at-home preparation time between classes.  The Level 3, 4 and 5 programs may also include more shows/performances/filming opportunities.
  • Each class and student is provided with a detailed Course Curriculum Outline at the beginning of the season outlining all performance or filming requirements and specific curriculum goals, learning tools and teaching strategies ~ a roadmap of where and how we’ll take the class through the season! We discuss specific goals with each student, at the start, at the mid-way point and at the end of the season so we always know what we’re working towards!  And each student receives a personalized Progress Report at the end of each season celebrating their amazing achievements and growth, setting intentions for their continued development, and recommending next steps, all based on the student’s own goals and interests for their training and development.
