More Classical Ensemble F.A.Q.'s!
  • Q:  How long are the classes?
  • A:  Classes will run for 90mins, with the first 60-75 mins focusing on ensemble playing.  The latter portion will be a solo master class where students (on a rotating schedule) will perform solo works and receive commentary and feedback from class peers and the course instructor.

  • Q:  How can this class help me as a musician?
  • A:  This class provides a true ensemble experience in addition to solo/master class work.  Performing in an ensemble of any size is a shared experience requiring development of a different skillset than solo performance.  The class will help develop those skills through a variety of exercises both in and out of the studio setting.

Ovation! adds a new dimension to the experience, by creating performance opportunities for the students so they can learn to apply their skills and talents in real live experiences.  The best way to learn to perform better, is to perform over and over again with a live audience.

  • Q:  Can this class help me with auditioning?
  • A: Ovation! can help overcome the obstacles associated with auditions and performance.  Whether you're a violinist looking to audition for a workshop or program, or a cellist preparing for a concert recital.  Our work in this ensemble class allows the student to fulfill their potential and helps them achieve their 'personal best' every time they play.
  • Q:  I already have a fabulous instrument teacher....why should I enroll in Ovation?
  • A: This ensemble class is meant to augment the student’s current education in a mutually beneficial way.  Ovation! seeks to bring out the musicality and technique of the student to the best of their ability in a performance situation. Performance technique is not often taught, and Ovation! concentrates on developing the enjoyment and passion of performance for each student, rather than anxiety.

The ensemble class also allows the student to grow in a musical group setting.  Making music together in an ensemble will bring a new level to the student’s musical experience.  Music as an art form is a continuous journey.  One can never learn enough, but can hope to gain as much as possible.

  • Q:  What repertoire will be covered?
  • A:    Music from Johann Sebastian Bach (1700s) to Claude Debussy (early 1900s) will be covered.  Various musical styles exist with each composer and time period.   Students will understand the history of the composer and intentions in order to apply to their performance.

  • Q:  As a parent, will I be able to monitor my son/daughter’s progress?
  • A:  Yes ~ via periodic take-home DVD recordings and community performance opportunities.

Each class will consist of a solo master class portion, where a student will perform a solo work of choice in the time period assigned.  All other students will take part in providing comments in written/oral format, with the instructor suggesting different approaches that could improve the performance.  The performances of each student will be recorded onto DVD format.  It is integral that the student view his/her performance, documenting improvement throughout the year.

I sit down to the piano regularly at nine-o'clock in the morning and Mesdames les Muses have learned to be on time for that rendezvous.

~ Pyotr Tchaikovsky, quoted in Schafer, British Composers in Interview (1963)

Mozart in his music was probably the most reasonable of the world's great composers. It is the happy balance between flight and control, between sensibility and self-discipline, simplicity and sophistication of style that is his particular province.

~ Aaron Copland, Copland on Music (1960)

Music is the one incorporeal entrance into the higher world of knowledge which comprehends mankind but which mankind cannot comprehend.

~ Ludwig van Beethoven, quoted by Bettina von Arnin, letter to Goethe, 1810
